Youngs Memorial Cemetery — Theodore Roosevelt's Grave
📍 134 Cove Road, Oyster Bay, NY 11771
The final resting place of Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States, and his wife Edith Kermit Roosevelt. TR died at Sagamore Hill on January 6, 1919, and was buried here two days later after a simple service at Christ Church. His casket was carried up 26 snow-dusted steps to the hilltop — 26, for the 26th president. From the grave you can look out over the glittering waters of Oyster Bay below. The cemetery dates to 1658, when the Youngs family set aside land on their own property. Thomas Youngs, an early Oyster Bay settler, is also buried here, as are several Roosevelt family descendants. Former President William Howard Taft stood alone at the grave weeping after the ceremony, later writing to Edith: "I loved him always and cherish his memory." Free admission; open daily 9am to dusk.
