Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center

📍 134 Cove Road, Oyster Bay, NY 11771

The first Audubon Songbird Sanctuary established in the United States, created in 1923 adjacent to Youngs Memorial Cemetery. The land was gifted by Emlen Roosevelt, TR's cousin, who purchased it specifically to protect the cemetery from development. Theodore Roosevelt had told Emlen that this forested cove held the greatest variety of birds around Oyster Bay — a fitting tribute from a president who established 150 national forests, 51 federal bird reservations, and five national parks. The sanctuary is managed by the National Audubon Society and open to the public.
